How to Use the Expression Editor

You will use the Expression Editor, shown below, in lessons where you need to enter an expression, equation, or inequality in an answer field.

Expression Editor

When you see the symbol below, it means that you need to use the Expression Editor to enter your answer. Click the symbol to open the Expression Editor.

How do I enter an exponent?

Click (the Superscript key). Then type an exponent.

To get out of a superscript field, position the pointer outside the superscript box toward the right side of the display window, and click the mouse button.

For example, to enter the expression :

1. Click x.

2. Click .

3. Click 2.

4. Click outside the superscript box toward the right side of the display window.

5. Click +; click 1.

How do I to enter parentheses?

Click (the Parentheses key). Then type an expression. To get out of a parentheses field, position the pointer to the right of the parentheses, and click the mouse button.

For example, to enter 2(3 + x) + 1:

1. Click 2.

2. Click .

3. Click 3; click +; click x.

4. Click outside the parentheses, toward the right side of the display.

5. Click +; click 1.

How do I enter a stacked fraction?

Click (the Stacked Fraction key). Then type an expression in the numerator. Next, position the pointer in the denominator field and click the mouse button, then type an expression in the denominator. To get out of a stacked fraction field, position the pointer to the right of the fraction, and click the mouse button.

1. Click x; click +.

2. Click .

3. The pointer is in the numerator field. Click 3; click x.

4. Move the pointer to the denominator field and click.

5. Click 2.

6. Click outside the fraction, toward the right side of the display.

7. Click +; click 1.

How do I enter complex numbers?

Click (the Imaginary Number key) or type the letter i on your keyboard. For example, to enter 5 + 3i:

1. Click 5.

2. Click +.

3. Click 3; click .

How do I enter an expression inside an absolute value?

Click (the Absolute Value key). Then type an expression. To get out of the absolute value field, position the pointer to the right of the absolute value bars, and click the mouse button.

For example, to enter the expression |3x - 1| + 5:

1. Click .

2. Click 3; click x; click -; click 1.

3. Click the pointer outside the absolute value bars, toward the right side of the display window.

4. Click +; click 5.

How do I enter logs?

Click (the Log key). Type the base. Then position the pointer in the argument field, and click the mouse button. Then type the argument. To get out of the argument field, position the pointer outside the parentheses toward the right side of the display window, and click the mouse button.

1. Click .

2. Type 10 in the base field.

3. Move the pointer to the argument field and click.

4. Type 3.

How do I enter natural logs?

Click (the Natural Log key). Then type the argument. To get out of the argument field, position the pointer outside the parentheses toward the right side of the display window, and click the mouse button.

For example, to enter ln 47:

1. Click .

2. Click 47.

How do I enter e to a power?

Click (the e-to-the-x key). Then type the power in the superscript field. To get out of a superscript field, position the pointer outside the superscript box toward the right side of the display window, and click the mouse button.

For example, to enter :

How do I enter an expression under a square root sign?

Click (the Radical key). Then type an expression. To get out of a square root field, position the pointer outside the radical sign toward the right side of the display window, and click the mouse button.

1.Click 2; click x.

2.Click .

3.Click x; click +; click 1.

4.Click the pointer outside the radical sign, toward the right side of the display.

5.Click +; click 1.

How do I enter an expression to the nth root?

Click (the nth Root key). Type the index. Position the pointer in the radicand field and click the mouse button. Then type an expression. To get out of the radicand field, position the pointer outside the radical sign toward the right side of the display window, and click the mouse button.

1. Click 5.

2. Click .

3. Click 3.

4. Move the pointer to the radicand field and click.

5. Click x; click +; click 1.

6. Click the point outside the radical sign, toward the right side of the display.

7. Click +; click 2.

How do I erase?

Click to erase the character or expression to the left of the pointer.

Click to erase the entire expression in the display.

How do I close the Expression Editor?

Click to close the Expression Editor window and move the contents of its display into the answer field.

Click to close the Expression Editor window without moving the contents of its display into your answer field.

How do I move the Expression Editor around the screen?

Position the pointer in the title bar, hold down the mouse button, and drag the Expression Editor to a different position.
